Jabalpur’s Shreya Agrawal Bags Gold In Asian Air Gun Championships

Jabalpur-based shooter Shreya Agarwal has won Gold medal in the ongoing Asian Air Gun Championships, shattering the Junior World record in 10m Air Rifle event on Monday. She scored 252.5 points in the final, breaking the earlier record of 252.4 points. Meanwhile, another shooting prodigy Mehuli Ghosh also won the bronze medal in this category. She scored 228.3 points

This is the second gold for the Indian shooters in the competition.

Shreya (18) made a world record in the junior category, surpassing the record of China’s Rooseux Zhao, who scored 252.4 in the World Championship in Korea on April 22, last year. Shreya paired with Yashvardhan has already won the gold medal of the 10-meter air rifle, junior mixed team. Mehuli Ghosh and Prajapati’s duo was successful in winning the silver medal in that event.

As we witness the stunning victory by this shooting prodigy, here are few things to know about Shreya Agarwal:

  • Shreya comes from Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation (GNSPF).
  • She had a stellar run at the International Junior Shooting Tournament in Plzen last year.
  • Back then, the 17-year-old girl from Madhya Pradesh was the second Indian to enter the final with shooting star Elavenil Valarivan in Air Rifle Women event in the competition.
  • She was also selected in the Indian junior shooting team for World Cup, held in Korea in August last year.
  • The 52nd ISSF World Championship in Changwon, Korea turned memorable for the teenager as she won team gold and set a new junior women’s world record in 10 m air rifle category. She also won an individual bronze medal.
  • With the medal added to her tally, she had three medals in the championship, including one gold and world record.
  • A class 12 student, Shreya is a regular trainee at the Gun for Glory Shooting Academy in Jabalpur.
  • She practices under Coach Nishant Nathwani in the academy.
  • She also brought laurels by winning a bronze medal in 10th Asian Air Gun Shooting Championship held in Japan in 2017. The medal came in the 10-meter Air Rifle, Youth Category.
  • Shreya has been pursuing her passion for shooting for only four years now.
  • She had bagged Gold and Silver medals in various National Level Competitions.
  • She was selected as part of the Government of India’s new initiative ‘Khelo India’ in the first round and pioneered as the first shooter from the city to be selected in the Indian team for this competition.
  • Shreya always maintains a fine balance between her studies and her passion for the sport.
  • Her elder brother Yash Agarwal is also a National Level Pistol Shooter. Her father works in the Provident Fund Office while her mother Meena Agarwal is a teacher.
  • To participate in the 12th Asian Air Gun Championships, biology student Shreya had to skip her exam because the dates were clashing with the dates of the trial in New Delhi.
